Understanding The Allure Of The Lower Back Tattoo

Since the early 1990’s, many women have been getting tattoos done on their lower backs for a variety of reasons.  Lower back tattoos have been a source of female empowerment and of controversy in recent years, spawning many media reports of the meaning of such tattoos and urban myths about the dangers associated with the tattoos.  Through it all, lower back tattoos have remained a popular body art addition for individuals all over the world.

Lower back tattoos are generally designed to have flowing lines and feminine images that will look well when placed in the curvature of the back.  Tribal tattoos are often considered for the main design because of the bold lines that are used in the design.  Likewise, flowers and hearts surrounded by ribbons or streamers are also popular lower back designs as the ribbons can be extended to further accentuate the curves of the back and hips.

There seems to be something inherently sensual about having the design placed on the lower back, possibly because the design draws the eye to the curves of the female form and being able to glimpse the design just above the pants or panty line sparks arousal in a number of individuals.  It may be a little bit naughty as well as the lower back is not an area that is seen very often, typically glimpsed when the person is not fully dressed or by accident when the person’s clothing has shifted.  It is possible to know an individual for years and never suspect that they have a lower back tattoo hidden under their shirt.

Some of the controversy surrounding lower back tattoos revolves around the sensual nature of the tattoo.  Instead of viewing the lower back tattoo as a symbol of women’s empowerment, some individuals viewed the tattoos as a symbol of a loose woman and began to call these types of tattoos “tramp stamps” or “skank stamps”.  As a result, many women decided against getting a lower back tattoo because they did not want to be viewed as morally corrupted.

Another common belief regarding lower back tattoos is that the ink in the tattoos can impede certain medical procedures, such as the spinal epidurals that women receive during the delivery of their child.  It was believed that the needle passing through the ink of the tattoo could transfer the ink into the spinal column, resulting in numerous health problems.  It has been found that injury or medical issues created in this way was so unlikely that no one should be concerned about it because there was virtually no possibility of it happening to them.

Although there have been negative connotations associated with the lower back tattoo, many women still view them as lovely body art and choose the tattoos to adorn their own bodies.   Many tattoo artists will have numerous different designs available to choose from and many of the tattoo designs can be completed in a relatively short period of time.  The price of the tattoo will depend on the intricacy of the design and how large the finished tattoo will be.
